Thing #6: Flickr mashups

Ok step one, placing my name into letter from Flickr, actually liked this set as they came up so not much changes needed.

and the day is almost done so i will be back to edit the post next week and finish it up.

and the old one didn't work, so let me try that again:

The letter Pewter Ransom Font U McElman_071026_2450_N The letter \

ok, good got it working for that part of it.

In truth I do not know how any of these items would be useful in a library situation, though they are fun to play with. As far as how i feel about posting things online, i might allow landscapes and unidentifiable items be posted as public, but i don't like the idea of having a lot of identifiable images of myself posted online.

That's all for now. try to do the next thing soon.

Thing # 5: Flickr

Well lets see if i did this right. That is me, if you haven't guessed. And the picture is of my Halloween costume for 2008 that I wore for the costume contest at my library. it is now on flickr. yeah!

onto the blog prompts:

This is the first time i have used a general photo sharing type site, however i have used Deviant art before to display some of my projects like sculpting pics. the uploading system for flickr is interesting in that you can upload multiple pictures at the same time. I am very likely to use this system for uploading all of my pictures i have taken so that they are backed up.

On the issue of private vs public, i think the only thing i will have public are pictures that do not identify me directly as to who i am or where i live.

as for uses for the library, i am not sure because i don't work in that area, but from the tour it looks like the pictures can be put on a wide variety of products or pamphlets that might be useful.

that's all for now.

hmm need to look into seeing if the blog allows for a signature to be automatically added to posts

Thing #4: now this might be usefull

Well surprisingly RSSs might actually end up being useful to me. Not in work situations mind you but at home. At work I have no reason to be online except to occasionally look up an address. So there is not that much need to keep up to date on anything in that respect. However at home I am an avid follower of several on line comics. The problem with following many different online comics is they often have different schedules of how they are updated and checking them frequently can be a pain. I was quite happy to find that many of the comics I read have RSS feeds, so this may be something I make use of at home.

So I would say adding an item when you already know the web page is easy, as for the searching for feeds feature. that is a little harder. Sadly an individual can name their blog or web page whatever they want and it may have very little to do with the content of the page, making it harder to find what you want.

People who have to keep up to date on certain current information sites may find this useful for work purposes, but seeing as how I don't do that type of work I just don't know.

That's about all for now, time to move on to thing five.

Thing #3: search the blog find the blog

Well I can happily say that went a lot faster than thing two. Searching the two sites is pretty much like searching with many of the internet search engines now a days. I find that most all of them have similar features with only one or two that have unique features. Blog searching did not seem that much different. I did a search for white tigers, and for thrown pottery in both the Technorati and IceRocket pages and found a variety of posts, very few actually relative to what I was thinking of. If I use the advanced setting to look up the exact phrase I get an overall greater amount of relivent information.

The amount of blog posts out there is impressive. though I am not sure how wise is it to give a level of authority based upon the number of other web sites link to it. It is just a online popularity contest of who has the most convincing post wether it is a lie or truth.

that's it for now, I will see about getting thing four done in a day or two and might get back on track.

Thing #2 (about time)

Wow talk about painfully time consuming. I have been working on trying to get thing two done for the better part of a week and a half. For one the written material is incredibly dense and takes thought to get through. Now I am not against this or learning complex things, but while I am at work I do not have time to sit, process and digest so much information that is not relevant to the job I am actively doing. It in fact makes me laugh when I think back to the six minute long video that I had to watch, in three separate segments because of time, the gentleman in the video mentioned if he can find time for several cigarette breaks during the day someone should have time to set aside 15 minutes out of work to do the 23 things. Smoking a cigarette does not take up too much mental processing and if you leave a cigarette and come back to it you do not have to remember where you left off.

Ok, I feel better now got my little rant out of the way, now I suppose I should get down to the business at hand of talking about the second thing and not just complaining.

Well will you look at that I actually ranted on the first suggested question without realizing it, well almost. I can say I will find the time between my regular duties of books, mail, magazines, and old patrons. and speaking of not having time, i have to go work some more and find time later to finish this......

from this point on is an edit:

And back to the grind and trying to finish this thing. Why am I participating in the 23 things? For one there is the chance of a prize at the end, I have an excuse to use one of the computers as much as I can, and though I will likely never use the things I learn about here I love trying out new things.

What do I hope to learn. anything.

and speaking of learning something I am off to thing three to try and learn something new.

;} hopefully it won't take me quite as long to do as thing two did.

Thing #1: a blog is born

Well look at that I just created a blog. Not too difficult to do, though I'm not all too sure that I will have use for this after the 23 things is finished. I guess we shall see if this program changes my mind at all.
